KEEPING OUR TEETH HEALTHY

It’s very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us chew our food. They also help us look nice. How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the enamel covering of the tooth. This happens after germs and bit of food have collected there. Then the decay slowly spreads inside to the tooth. Eventually, poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill.

How can we keep our teeth healthy? First, we ought to visit the dentist twice a year instead of only doing so when we feel the pain in our teeth. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way.

Secondly, we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day-once after the breakfast and once before we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal.

Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, raw vegetables, and fresh fruits. Chocolates, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

It is hard to imagine life in modern society without smartphones. These handy little devices keep us entertained and enable us to manage important tasks on the go. Although smartphones feature powerful hardware, they wouldn’t be so useful without thousands of handy applications. Here are a few free and helpful apps that you can download to help you throughout the day.
If you have a habit of forgetting things and want to organize your life, give Evernote a try. It promises to help users remember everything. With a few clicks, you can send all of your photos, documents, and audio notes to Evernote. Then, your digital information can be stored in folders or tagged with useful keywords. When you need to access this data, you can perform a simple search and it will appear in seconds. Evernote is available on smartphones, tablets, and computers, so you can access your data from everywhere.

Imagine this scenario. You are watching a TV show and you hear a cool song in the background. You want to buy it but there is one problem. You don't know the name of the song. SoundHound is an app that will make this problem a thing of the past. It enables users to quickly identify songs by launching the app and holding their phone in the air. The app takes the song playing and compares it to thousands of other songs until it finds a match. Within seconds, it can tell you the name, artist, and album of the song you just heard.
Another spectacular app is Lookout. Hopefully, you won’t have to use it often, but when you do
need it. Lookout can be a lifesaver. Its main function is to help you find your phone if it goes missing. Lookout does this by using your smartphone’s data connection to locate your lost device. To see where your phone is on a map, simply log into Lookout from any web browser. In the worst-case situation, if someone steals your phone and you fear it has gone for good, you can wipe out all of its data with a few clicks. This will ensure no one will see any private information on your phone.

These helpful apps are just the tip of the iceberg. If you do some searching online, you are certain to find many other apps that will make your life more convenient.

Câu 44:

I have had just about enough of being treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happened to be that put-upon member of society-a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I’m convinced that things are being run only to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a new motto for so–called “service” organizations – Staff Before Service.

How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there weren’t enough staff on duty to man all the service grills or checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to recruit cashiers or counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that unshrouding all their cash registers at any one time would increase overheads. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service grills to be occupied “at times when demand is low.”

It’s the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is curtailed. As for us guests (and how the meaning of that word has been whittled away), we just have to put up with it. There’s also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been phased out in the interests of “efficiency” (i.e. profits) and replaced by coin-eating machines which dispense everything from larger to laxatives. Not to mention the creeping menace of the tea–making kit in your room: a kettle with assortment of teabags, plastic milk cartons and limp sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I don't, especially when I am paying for “service”.

Can it he halted, this erosion of service, this growing attitude that the customer is always a nuisance? I fervently hope so because it’s happening, sadly, in all walks of life.

Our only hope if to hammer home our indignation whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, resurrect that other, older slogan-and Take Our elsewhere

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate thecorrect word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks.

Humanitarian Dorothea Dix was born in Hampden, Maine, in 1802. At the age of 19, she established a school for girls, the Dix Mansion School, in Boston, but had to close it in 1835 due to her poor health. She wrote and published the first of many books for children in 1824. In 1841, Dix accepted an invitation to teach classes at a prison in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was deeply disturbed by the sight of mentally-ill persons thrown in the jail and treated like criminals. For the next eighteen months, she toured Massachusetts institutions where other mental patients were confined and reported the shocking conditions she found to the state legislature. When improvements followed in Massachusetts, she turned her attention to the neighbouring states and then to the West and South.

Dix's work was interrupted by the Civil War; she served as superintendent of women hospital nurses for the federal government.

Dix saw special hospitals for the mentally-ill built in some fifteen states. Although her plan to obtain public land for her cause failed, she aroused concern for the problem of mental illnesses all over the United States as well as in Canada and Europe.
